AWARENESS and STIGMAS

It’s 2017, Right???

Today I ran across two articles that surprised me that we are still stuck with negative stigmas. Diabetes awareness is key making sure we keep advancing the prevention and treatment of the disease.  A few weeks ago, someone suggested that I research the new advancements with artificial pancreases.  Very promising future to really manage your entire life with minimal daily compromises.    Truly incredible research and testing are underway to get this into the market.

According to diabetesdaily.com here are our most updated stats:

  • 415 million adults have diabetes (1 in 11 adults)
  • By 2040, 642 million adults (1 in 10 adults) are expected to have diabetes
  • 46.5% of those with diabetes have not been diagnosed
  • 1 in 7 births is affected by gestational diabetes
  • 542,000 children have type 1 diabetes
  • 12% of global health expenditure is spent on diabetes ($673 billion)

The one that really hit me was that 46.5% of diabetics don’t even know about it yet.   We all know how detrimental that can be to their long-term health.   Breaking down the stigmas and getting screening information in front of peers is critically important.

I also ran across this an article about Miss Michigan proudly showcasing her continuous glucose monitor. This is the type of help we need to get the word out. Check out the video below, and share with your loved ones. Even one more person getting their diagnosis early in the progression will make me feel like I had an impact. I ask you to do the same!
